Claymore Alpha Barge

Lying in the Tay whilst loading with all the material for the Claymore Alpha, the name escapes me. There was trouble with the dockers wanting do do all the load and float out to the barge, Cheveron said no, we have our own slingers onto the barge. It lead to quite a long delay in loading, and caused Chevron never to take a vessel into Dundee again.

Typical Dundee unions, thats probably why Dundee lost so much business to the oil industry.

Semi submersible looks like the Treasure Hunter.

I was on the Claymore construction, and the Barge that lay alongside was the "Viking Piper", (if that is the one in the picture) which was used as an accomodation vessel as well as being a pipelaying barge.

The Barge in the photo was indeed the VIKING PIPER .I was the barge master at the time she came into the Tay river. The VIKING PIPER at the time was the largest pipelaying vessel in the world and the folk of Dundee was surprised to wake up and see her moored in the river. She was quite a large vessel to manouver into the Tay but we had very good tugs who know the vessel well and I had been barge master since March 1976 so I had good experience of handling her. I was master for the duration of the construction of the Claymore platform. An interesting time in the offshore construction phase of the project. Now retired but Ihave great memories of the time.

Surely it wasnt Chevron? Wasn't it Occidental? They had Piper A and Thistle didnt they? Armand Hammer and all that.....
Mr Lyons, I believe that VP still holds the record for the quickest pipe layer AND to lay pipe in a force 8 - is that true???
