Installation of K17 Monopod by GSF Monarch

The K17 is a tiny unmanned 'Shell Trident Monotower' in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. It is seen here during installation by the Global SantaFe Monarch jack-up. The K17 is yellow if you're not sure which bit is it.

Although it's a little difficult to make out in this photo, the drilling tower on the Monarch sticks out from the side of the Monarch, overhanging the K17, allowing her to drill right through the platform.

When in production all the power requirements for the K17 are provided by wind and solar enery.

Comments:
My first rope access job was on a Dutch platform with a similar setup. The drilling rig hung over the platform with a ladder to get up and down. The top of the platform was nothing but a helipad, and the main job we were on board to do was painting the helideck. We spent days chipping off the old paint, and then waited for a few days as bad weather prevented painting. Finally, with the client getting very fidgety due to the time, and therefore expense involved, the skies cleared and we got the first coat on.

Just as we completed it, a false fire alarm set off the deluge (like sprinklers on speed) on the drilling rig, soaking us and our paintwork which was ruined. We had to take it off and start again - took us 17 days in total!

The drilling tower is called a derrick, the derrick is on a cantilever which skids from the aft end of the rig enabling both stand alone drilling and working over a fixed instalation.
The cantilever can skid forward, backward, left and right allowing the rig to drill more than one well whilst on location.
