The Amerada Hess AH001 was converted back around 1986 in the dry dock at Nigg, adding 2 legs. It was in the middle of summer, and the stench of rotting sea life was terrible. I only had to work a couple of shifts on it there thankfully.
Years later I did a couple of trips on her offshore for CAN, and really enjoyed it - very nice rig. I remember buying a cracking Amerada Hess truck for my son onboard.
I think it was cross pontoons that were added costing 18 million pounds. After the deck was cleared it was discovered that the deck had fatigue problems or so the scuttlebut ran and the twin pontoons had to be braced. I have a picure of the oval shaped cross pontoOns just before they were installed.
